What you pull changes the job.
Dispatch is not one service applied to six trailers. The freight, the benchmark a rate should be argued against, and the ways money leaks out of a load are different behind each one — so these are six different pages rather than one page with the equipment name swapped.
By equipment
National average linehaul where one is published, week ending 14 August 2026. Rate per mile excludes fuel surcharge.
Dry van
Dry van is the deepest freight market in the country and the most crowded. The rate is rarely where a dry van week is won or lost — the accessorials are.
Reefer
Reefer pays better than dry van for a reason: more can go wrong, and when it does, the claim lands on you.
Flatbed
Flatbed pays for labor as much as miles. If your dispatcher is not billing for the tarp, they are giving away the part of the job that hurts.
Step deck
A step deck exists to solve one problem: freight that is too tall to ride legally on a flatbed. That is a smaller market and a better-paid one.
Power only
Power only trades trailer ownership for someone else's terms. Whether that is a good trade is arithmetic, and it is worth actually doing.
Hotshot
Hotshot works when the freight is urgent, light, and priced for speed. It stops working the moment someone treats a one-ton as a semi.
